April 2008
Our first
weekend where our family was going in separate directions to go racing.
Red Bull Rookies Cup Race 1: Barber Motorsports
Park 4/19-20- Travis
Wyman
“My Mom and I arrived at Barber Motorsports
Park for my first Red
Bull Race. I could not believe the intensity and greatness of a professional
road race. It was much more than I expected, and the fact that I was to be
competing among this wasn’t helping my nerves one bit. Saturday morning was the
time set for us to first practice. I went out and came back in the 9th
fastest position. I was real happy to be in the top 10 and was looking forward
to putting in some good lap times during qualifying in the afternoon session.
So I went out in qualifying and couldn’t get a good rhythm of laps together and
qualified 13th. It was a
little disappointing but I could still work with it. Sunday morning the 20th
we had a warm-up session at 8:30 in the morning to just get back into the
groove of things until my race at 11:00am. So the race time was coming nearer
and nearer and the amount of fans and people at this race really started to
sink in. I knew this was going to be a
tough thing to overcome. Going out for my warm up lap before the race I just
blocked out all of the outside distractions and just focused on getting a good
start. The green light turns on and I get an amazing start running in the 10th
position. But from there on my luck started to turn for the
worst. I was running consistent lap times but couldn’t seem to get any
quicker. I ended up finishing 17th which is a start. Thanks to Dave
LaFrance, Jim and Jason Disalvo, My Family, Grandma Lucy, and Grandpa and
Charlotte for all their encouragement to not let this race get to me and to
look forward to my future races.”

May 2008
“May 16-18 called for Round 2 of
the Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup being held in Sonoma, CA
at Infineon Raceway. Travis struggled in qualifying ending up 20th
for his starting position. He was able to work his way through the pack
somewhat during the race and was able to finish in 15th place.
May 23-24th – Springfield TT
Memorial Day weekend for us was a
long drive down to Springfield,
Illinois for the AMA Flat Track
GNC Singles Series at the Springfield TT. Travis was scheduled to run a
pro-sport event Friday night before the national, but it was rained out. Saturday
looked like rain as well, but the weather held out for us and we were able to
complete the program. I ended up qualifying 17th overall out of 96
entries. I felt decent in practice but still felt like the bike could be
handling better. Going into the heat race I had confidence and got a very good
start, but fell back to 10th place after the 10 lap heat race. My
semi consisted of some very fast company, and with a second row starting
position, there was little I could do to work my way to the front. I ended up
10th but gained a lot of experience along the way.” – Kyle Wyman
May 31st – Vernon Downs GNC Twins
“Vernon Downs was a track that I
had been looking forward to riding all spring. I felt very good at the test
day, and had confidence going into the Basic Expert Twins class at this race.
At the test day, Travis was riding our C&J 450 and blew up our mile motor,
so we put another motor in the frame with hopes of better luck, but again broke
a valve spring, breaking another motor and taking away his ability to compete
for the rest of the night. As far as my night, I qualified well, in 2nd
place, and then the skies opened up. We were on a 3 hour delay for rain, but
once we got the track back in shape we were back in action. We were told that
since we were delayed, they would skip our heat race and just run the main
event for us, so we put our main event tires on the bike and got ready to go.
Just as we were near pulling up for the main, they announce that they would
actually be running the heat race, and we did not have enough time to put on a
different tire to save our good rubber for the main. Regardless, I went out and
won the heat race by a margin of 3 seconds in a 5 lap race. The only remaining
tire we had left that would last the entire 12 laps of the main event was a
brand new tire. New tires work very poorly until they have a heat cycle in
them, especially on a grooved track. I had the holeshot and led the first three
laps, but one rider passed me and then another rider passed me with two laps to
go which put me back in 3rd for the finish. I had higher
expectations, but I felt as though I performed to my ability, and I had a blast
out there wide open on the cushion in the heat race.” – Kyle Wyman
